How to make a good website?
This is the question on everyone’s lips. Okay, so you know you need to upgrade to a mobile friendly website, or perhaps you’re starting a business website from scratch, either way, its best to get your thoughts down on paper. Use our Free Download: Design Brief - we try to keep it simple

Make a Good Website

what content is required?

Providing your website developer with a great design brief is like creating a roadmap that will guide them through everything you want from your website. As a web design agency in Glossop, we have built many websites and gained an understanding of how the best client relationships work. When a client provides us with an excellently detailed brief (this can take you on average 30 mins), the process of building their website becomes faster, allowing us to organise and schedule everything to align with their expectations more efficiently.

Basically, we encourage all clients to provide as much information as possible so we can deliver their website quicker and reducing the labour costs, which means they pay less for their website!

Generally, we can divide the information that should be provided into 8 sections:

  • Client information
  • Project description
  • Target audience
  • Competition
  • Needs and requirements (deliverables)
  • Tone, imagery and messaging
  • Timeline and budget
  • Ultimate goals and metrics

By providing as much of this information from the very beginning, we can reduce the amount of time from project start to completion. If we know our client’s exact goals, we can work efficiently and directly toward them.

1. Client Information

Firstly, we need to know about your business and take a deeper look at who you are and what you do.

Some common questions we may ask include:

  • What is the size of your company?
  • What products or services do you offer?
  • What is the history of the company?
  • Who is the target audience for your product or service?

Additionally, when we sit down to meet with you, we will be able to get a gauge on your personality and the values you present with your company. This will help to set the tone of the project and what needs to come across in your website.

2. Project Description

When starting a new website project, it is good to define the goals of your new website and what you want to achieve by having it redesigned. You should have a good handle on the objectives of the website, what you want to accomplish, problems you may be facing and how you’d like to address them and what you will use to measure the website’s success. Knowing these pieces of information will help us to make better design choices that are suited to your personal aims.

3. Target Audience

You need to know who your target audience and what demographics they cover, as this will have a big effect on the design of your website. The design should connect with the type of people you are promoting your business to, so it’s great if you can create a profile of the perfect customer.

To build this, you need to think about:

  • Demographics- age, race, gender etc.
  • Behavioural patterns – when they are online, how often they will visit your website etc.

Putting yourself in the position of your customer will help you achieve this and help you create a profile based on how they think, feel and behave. Knowing this information will allow us to make design choices that are better suited to the people who you want to see it.

4. Competition

Who are your key competitors? How do they sit in the market? What does their market share look like? These are some of the questions you should be asking yourself. They will help you to define their strengths and weaknesses and allow you to learn from their successes and mistakes in your website design.

The main things you should think about are:

  • Their strengths
  • Their weaknesses
  • Opportunities you must do better
  • Any threat they and you pose on each other.

5. Deliverables

Each client has different needs and requirements for their website, and you are no different. We ideally like to create a list of them in order of your preferences and execution as this will help bring clarity to your website project.

Mike from IPH Mist Suppression states “I ensured I listed down everything I needed my website to do in order for it to help my business goals.”

6. Tone, Imagery and Messaging

For your message to be communicated effectively to your customers, the tone of the website needs to be correct from the beginning. This should align with the overall mood of your website, as well as how your brand is marketed in the real world. Your audience should have a seamless experience between your website and real life, so it is important for the tone to be consistent. Ask yourself about colours, imagery and how you want to be represented as this will have a big impact on your potential customers.

7. Timeline and Budget

You need to create firm and realistic expectations for when you want your website to be completed by. This is especially important if your website’s launch is part of a wider marketing campaign. You should also think about how much you are expecting to pay for your website as this helps to foster a good relationship with no surprise costs down the road.

Ann from Calderdale Homecare stated “It was important for our business to know the new website budget would be effective and we could depend on completion being achieved by the deadline.”

8. Ultimate Goals and Metrics

Knowing what metrics will define the success of your project from the beginning, will help Peak Promotions to focus on making better design choices for these needs. In turn, your customers will have better experiences (UX) on your website, helping you to generate more enquiries/sales.

Creating the right brief for your website can be time-consuming but it will save you time and stress in the long-run and help yourself and the designer stand firmly as a team. This will help us to ensure that you are satisfied with the final website and how it is delivered to you. Your brief doesn’t need to be beautiful, but it should provide enough information to allow the designer to create the best website possible for you.
